The Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) was founded in 1996 by internationally recognized oncologists Stephen B. Strum, M.D. and Mark C. Scholz, M.D. with support from the Daniel Freeman Hospital Foundation in Southern California.

The objective of PCRI is to educate patients and their families about prostate cancer, including new advances in diagnosis, staging, treatments and unfilled resources. PCRI believes that a patient who understands his disease and treatment is empowered to communicate more effectively with his physicians and obtain a better outcome.

The PCRI Helpline is support service unfilled to broadcast dealing with prostate cancer via phone and email. It is staffed by survivors of prostate cancer, some of which are physicians, but the focus is on directing inquirers to information and not practicing medicine.

Bernhoff A. Dahl, M.D. is the former Chief of Pathology at the Eastern Maine Medical Center and co-founder of Dahl-Chase Pathology Friends , which serves twenty hospitals and laboratories in Maine. Even if he had no family history of prostate cancer, after years of monitoring his PSA and a negative biopsy, in September 2004 his second biopsy showed aggressive cancer. Dr. Dahl the set about to gain all the current concepts in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment and opted for all four foremost treatment modalities: androgen-depravation therapy (ADT3), radical prostatectomy, chemotherapy, and external beam radiation therapy, all of which he received in one year. Now three year since the diagnosis was made he has an undetectable PSA, changed his diet drastically, and living every day. During these years of therapy he wrote the book Optimize Your Life!which has become an international best-peddler (www.TrionicsUSA.com) . His current work-in-progress is Take Charge of Your Life…or Someone Else Will! which includes material on taking charge of one’s healthcare.

In addendum to the Helpline, PCRI works closely with other prostate support groups, plotting and presenting eight inhabitant and regional conferences. It also maintains a powerful web site with a full range of literature on prostate cancer, as well as a quarterly newsletter PCRI Insights.

There are two forms of diabetes, type 1 in which the islet cells of the pancreas stop making insulin and the insulin has to be full daily by injection. In type 2 there is a loss of insulin sensitivity requiring a lower glycemic diet,and various forms of medication including insulin shots to manage blood sugar levels.

It has long been plotting that the immune system attacked the islet cells in the pancreas, and hurt them to the point where they no longer produced insulin. It was plotting that there was no way of reversing diabetes. Recent research at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada has produced an experimental method that has reversed type 1 diabetes in mice and could result in a cure for diabetes in humans. The scientists were experimenting on mice that were specifically bred to have type 1 diabetes. They started to investigate the function and role of sensory nerves in the pancreas and their effect on the insulin producing islet cells. What they found was that the nerves produced too much of a neurochemical called substance-p which causes inflammation nearly the islet cells damaging them and preventing them from producing insulin.

They then developed an experimental technique, which involved injecting an anti-inflammatory extract of chili peppers called capsaicin into the nerves, which cut-rate the level of substance-p. The result was a normalizing of islet cell function and the complete elimination of diabetes in the mice in a 24-hour period.This research is groundbreaking but preliminary. It is vital because the scientists have for the first time identified a means involving the nervous system that directly causes the islet cells to stop functioning. They reasoned that the next step is an experimental technique to be used in humans, involving injections of capsicum into the pancreas.

In an fascinating side note, capsicum is an extract of chili peppers, called cayenne. Cayenne has been used for centuries as a “folk remedy” for diabetic problems and it is completely harmless and safe for human consumption. It seems that once again modern medicine has validated ancient wisdom.

While much research and testing ruins to be done, this technique when perfected could lead to a cure for diabetes in humans, or at the very least revolutionize the treatment of diabetes greatly increasing the quality of life for persons who suffer from it.

Not much is known about mesothelioma, even though each year nearly 10,000 broadcast die of it nearly the US. The first case of mesothelioma linked to asbestos inhaling was recorded as early as 1898. Then year by year more cases started to appear until now where the number reaches more than 100,000.

According to the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 1.3 million US hard workers of the construction industries and persons involved in buildings and equipment maintenance are at risk of acquiring mesothelioma by inhaling asbestos. You most certainly reckon that a mesothelioma research funding should be started. Well you’re right, and there is! It’s called the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Their mission is to and I quote:

“• funding the highest quality and most promising research projects from nearly the planet through our rigorous peer-reviewed process;

• helping patients connect with inhabitant meso experts and obtain the most up-to-date information on treatment options;

• and advocating in Washington D.C. for federal mesothelioma research funding to stop this inhabitant tragedy.”

You can rest assured that someone somewhere is doing something about informing the broadcast of the deadly mesothelioma. We can dream of a day in which no more companies use this toxic material… asbestos.

General Information

So far mesothelioma is known to be a malignant tumor caused by inhaling asbestos fibers for a long period of time. It is very hard to control and its symptoms appear from 10 to 20 and in some cases even 30 years after exposure. The most run of the mill types are pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lungs, and peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the belly .

For now there are various treatments that can be used to care for mesothelioma. It generally depends on the stage of the disease, your age and the location of the cancer. It varies from radiation rays, chemotherapy, and surgery. Though none of these procedures in fact cure the illness, they just act according to symptoms and try to alleviate the patient from as much pain as possible.
